Extravagance In Devotion
Mark 14:1-9
1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only
two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law
were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him.
2 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or the people may
riot."
3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of
a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster
jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the
jar and poured the perfume on his head.
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another,
"Why this waste of perfume? 5It could have been sold for more
than a year's wages and the money given to the poor." And they
rebuked her harshly.
6"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She
has done a beautiful thing to me. 7The poor you will always have
with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will
not always have me. 8She did what she could. She poured perfume
on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9I tell you the
truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,
what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
1.THE HEART OF EXTRAVAGANCE (v6-8)
Look at Marys heart: a perceptive heart
Some knew who Jesus was.
Martha
Jn. 11:27
Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ,
the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
Peter
Mt. 16:16
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God."
But.
Mary had a perceptive heart.
She knew Jesus was going to die.
Perception
Def: Sharp ability to understand or discern something.
She was anointing Jesus the King
Why did Jesus respond so strongly?
Who you think Jesus is,determines how you live your life.
A devoted heart (v6)
She has done a beautiful thing to me.
Genuine act of devotion.
From the heart, not a mask.
Truly devoted despite situations.
Her brother dies. She responds devotedly.
Jn. 11:29 .
29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
2. UNUSUAL ACTS OF EXTRAVAGANCE (v3-5)
From our heart of devotion comes action.
Two characteristics.
a. Unusual in extent (v3a)
Nar perfume very expensive
She used it all, poured it out.
True devotion will not be constrained by cost. True devotion
will lead to acts of extravagance.
We will be willing to step out far for God.
b. Unusual in expression (v3b)
Broke the bottle to use it.
Knew it was all to be used
Fully devoted to God we are willing to do whatever.
Macedonian church had little, gave a lot.
2 Cor 8:5
"And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves
first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will."
3. OPPOSITION TO EXTRAVAGANCE (v4-5)
Some of those present were saying indignantly to one
another...
When we do for God, expect opposition.
Comes from outside. Why?
1. Failed to appreciate the motivation of Mary v4
2. Some failed to appreciate the significance of the
extravagance (v5a)
3. Others fail to appreciate because of a critical heart (v5b)
4. THE IMPACT OF EXTRAVAGANCE (v9)
what she has done will also be told of her, in memory of her.
Not about the act, but the heart.
Impacts to the Kingdom
Dont underestimate acts of devotion
Little things can have big meaning: a seed
John 12:24 "I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls
to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it
dies, it produces many seeds." And Jesus applied it to Himself
by sacrificing Himself on the cross for you and I.
Impacts our walk with God.
Conclusion:
If we truly know who Jesus is let us respond with deep devotion!
Commit yourself today to following Jesus fully. |
